Grovely, Samford and Mitchelton Parishes are supporting an upcoming community event celebrating International Women’s Day.

It is being hosted by the Mt Maria College Mitchelton P & F in conjunction with Year 12 students and Mt Maria College Mitchelton Social Justice Captains, Miss Lily Moffatt and Miss Zara Grlj.
Local radio station YYY FM 87.6 interviewed the Year 12 students recently where they shared the theme and purpose of the event which is aligned to and supported by the Queensland Government’s 2019 International Women’s Day theme “Invest in Women, Invest in the Future”
Miss Moffat shared: “The event is called “Women – Money – Connection” and is designed to educate women about becoming financially independent.”
Along with a complimentary afternoon tea, there will be opportunities to network with other women, hear from keynote speakers and visit information stalls about managing money, careers and part-time business opportunities for women.
Three invited speakers will present on the day including Women’s Finance expert Michelle House from Living Rich who will talk about ways for women to increase their income and financial independence. College Alumni 2017 Mackenzie Bond will share her journey in developing a start-up phase business called Outback Wings, and Brisbane BUNYA Lions Club District Governor-Elect Donna Hedges will talk about a new program called “New Voices” designed to increase the number of women in leadership, Donna is a Mitchelton local and spent years in Leadership at Mitchelton State High School.
The event will culminate in a Fundraising Clothes Swap to raise money for charities that empower and support the economic development of women. Entry is a $10 donation at the door with visitors being invited to fill a bag of clothing to take home.
Miss Grlj said that donations are being accepted for children, teenage boys and girls, ladies and men, and accessories such as handbags, jewellery, belts and shoes are also welcomed.
Local Stylist, Lee Martin from Style Your Way in Ferny Hills will be on hand to offer styling advice to visitors.
A special Formal Wear Pop Up Shop selling dresses, shirts, suits, shoes, bags and accessories will be there.
The event is supported by the Queensland Government and local community associations including; Enoggera Baptist Church, YYY FM 87.6 Radio, Brisbane Bunya Lions Club, Style Your Way Ferny Hills, The Catholic Parishes of Grovely, Mitchelton and Samford, Mt Maria College Mitchelton and the Mt Maria College Mitchelton P & F.
Money raised will go to local community organisation The Nest and Caritas Australia.
